Best Beginner Motorcycle

One question that I often get is “what motorcycle should I buy?”. Firstly, buying a motorcycle is a very individual thing. What style of motorcycle should I buy? What size of motorcycle should I buy?

Let me start by saying, I believe that as a learner you should be buying a smaller motorcycle. The last thing you need at this very early stage is worrying about handling a big heavy motorcycle and the possibility of dropping the bike. Not only is this embarrassing and potentially harmful, it’s not what you need to thinking about. Manoeuvring your motorcycle in traffic, at stop signs and hill starts etc, is going to be more than enough to manage without the weight of a big bike.

Next thing is really what style do you like? Cruiser? Sports? Naked? Adventure? Mini? Dirt? Cafe? Don’t quite know what I am talking about? Then read on. I am going to give examples of the different styles of bike and the difference between them. The examples I am going to talk about are just suggestions. There are many more to choose from in each category, but obviously listing all bikes would make the list way to big. I think you’ll get the idea.

Cruiser
VStar 250

A cruiser style bike is lower to the ground and this suits a lot of female riders as they can get both feet on the ground comfortably due to the lower seating position. The bike is somewhat lighter than other cruises. The relaxed seated position makes for a great cruising.

Sports
Suzuki GSX 250R

You have the look and feel of a Super Sports bike, but the difference with this model is that your handle bars are a bit higher than the traditional sports bikes, which gives you a more upright seating position, as opposed to leaning over too far. As you can see, this bike has a fairing, meaning the motor is covered. This bike is lighter and corners well.

Naked
Honda CB300R

This is a great comfortable bike due to it’s upright seating position. It’s got enough torque to get you going. The controls are easy to find and your feet sit sweetly on the pegs. The word naked simply means that the bike has no chunky fairings along the side of the bike.

Cafe
Suzuki TU250

The TU is a lightweight street bike. It’s a little cafer racerish with it’s style and has the retro look that a lot of people are keen on these days. Great starter bike.

Adventure
BMW 310GS

The 310GS gives all the comfort to ride on the road, but if you are on an adventure and discover some dirt, this bike will easily conquer some simple dirt roads that you might happen across.

Mini
Honda Monkey 125

This little treasure is a throwback from the 1960’s. How cute is it? If you just want a little run around bike to get you to the shops for milk and bread, then this bike is a winner. It’s not going to get you around Australia though, just keep that in mind.

Trail / Dirt
Honda CRF300L

This versatile motorbike will take you anywhere. Great for the trails and off road, around the farm and comfy enough to get you around town.

Well, that about wraps it up.
I hope this has given you a bunch of ideas of which bike you might like to buy. Send me a email, I’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have about buying your first motorbike.
